We Got in a Pool, Learned about Bitcoin, Went Joyriding, and Gave out the Truth, Mate!

Monday, June 11, 2018

Hello, all! It has been a quick and absolutely crazy week in Limassol. The weather is hot and sticky, but we are smashing it anyways!

TUESDAY: I looked up some answers a member had about eternal marriage and living with God. He wanted to know where in the Bible it talks about it and was very skeptical, but your boy over here happens to know where to find the Topical Guide to the Scriptures, σημαίνει. We smashed the questions using the Bible and Doctrine and Covenants. We went up to a member's home in the mountains and got in her pool! That's right, she asked us to clean it for her. I, being a good Florida boy, thought it would be easy. But when we got there, THERE WAS NO WATER IN IT. Turns out, it is a broken old pool and had tons of leaves that we needed to clean out. The same member also has an old electric piano. She was very pleased to show us that you can record music directly from the piano right onto the inserted FLOPPY DISC. I was dead. UPDATE ON THE DIET: It’s going well; we are eating salads and smoothies and running every other morning.

WEDNESDAY: We had service at the Red Cross, and Elder V. made a killer curry. We visited a less-active family who are from China. Their son is 6 but has the spunk of a 16-year-old. He's legendary. We went with the Risers to go see another family's daughter's play. I can't upload pics this week, but next week, you will see what a Greek Children's Play looks like (don't get your hopes up; elementary school is the same all over the world). It was such a great experience.

THURSDAY: We met with our pastor friend in the morning and watched a Mormon vs. "Christian” debate (Mormons are Christian; the name of our church literally has JESUS CHRIST in it: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), and we explained more about the Plan of Salvation. We visited the same part-member family that we were with on Wednesday and celebrated their daughter's birthday. You will see pics and videos next week.

We went to a meet up with our Russian friend that night. He wasn't sure what the meet-up would be, but he invited us to come along, so we did. Turns out, it was the weekly meeting of the BITCOIN CLUB LIMASSOL! So, we learned all about cryptocurrencies and stock markets. Apparently, they are now focusing on 2nd level solutions to overcome the extremely high transaction fees of current cryptocurrencies. They do this using block chain applications and different ISOs. There was a new ISO there, and they pitched an idea. They are trying to provide a better banking solution for cryptocurrencies. Now, if you understood all of that, bravo! [Editor's note: I've linked articles that explain all of this jargon.]

FRIDAY: We helped out at the charity shop and met with a Russian guy. He is not interested at all in the Book of Mormon and just wants to be friends with us. Then, we met with our best friend here. He is 25 and Cypriot, and we play football with him. We gave him the Book of Mormon, and he was grateful for the gift and said he would read it. He's a lad. We had another lesson that night with a Cypriot man. It went so-so. But, he has read almost the entire Book of Mormon. On another note, I marked in my journal how incredibly hot it was outside.

SATURDAY: We cleaned the church and had coordination meeting with the Risers. Nothing interesting happened until the evening. We went to football at the usual time but due to the heat, nobody was there. We knew they were on their way, so we waited. Elder V. was just kicking goals when we noticed this guy watching us. Eventually, he entered the pitch and asked if more people will come and play. We told him, “Yeah, in a few minutes.” So, he ran home and got his stuff. Turns out he is from Russia and is working here for a few months as a chef on a boat. He's cool, and we are hoping to talk to him again next week.

We rushed home to make a meeting with another friend. We met this guy my first week here. He was working as part of a crew cleaning the park right next to our apartment. We offered to help and got to talking with all of them. Well, this guy just loves us for some reason and really wanted to chill with us. So, he picked us up and just starts flying, man, Toyota Celica blasting Greek pop music with the windows down. He starts going through the bar and club district, and Elder V. and I are just like, "Oh no, not again" (yeah there's a story there).

We stopped to get drinks at a coffee shop (chocolate stuff for us), and we asked where we are going. He says, "Wherever you want." So, we suggested we go to the beach, lol. We got to sit on some rocks next to the water and get to know him. He's such a lad and just a free spirit. On a plus, we have a ride to Ayia Napa whenever we want one, lol (Editor’s note: Ayia Napa is a remote fishing village that has a reputation as a “party town.” More info can be found here).

SUNDAY: Church was good, and one of our friends came. We have been talking to him about the importance of the Sacrament and church, and he finally decided to come. We had a lot of calls and texts all day for some reason. We got a call from an American missionary in Saratov, Russia. He is from Alpine, Utah, so shout out to his mom if she somehow reads this. Apparently, there is a Russian member who will be moving here soon. So, we put her in contact with one of our Russian members to get all that sorted. We had a leadership meeting over Zoom (like Skype) with the Zone Leaders and the other set of District Leaders. It was a good meeting, and we are looking forward to Zone Conference. We had a lesson with a former investigator from the sisters. She is from China and works here. She has been taught everything but understands very little due to her lack of English knowledge. She is so nice and really wants to follow what God wants her to do.

Well, that was my week. There is so much more, but I could never write that much. I hope everyone is well and has a great week!
