Nicosia: The City of Filipino Food

Elder Muller's Study Area

Hello, everybody!

These emails will probably be getting shorter due to a rule change in the mission. The time we have to email has been cut back, and so fitting everything in means shortening emails.

TUESDAY: We took the bikes to the bike shop to get them fixed. We met two guys who were speaking to each other. One was Cypriot, and the other was Greek. I can definitely say Cypriot and Greek are two different languages. It is not all in my head. They sound totally different. I understood everything the Greek man said; the Cypriot I understand like 65-70%. We made friends with some ladies in a shop and then met another lady in a shop who went psycho. She was literally hopping from side to side as she spoke about how we need to give our whole hearts to God. Um, hello lady. We are away from home, electronics, girls, hobbies, work, school, etc. We are giving our whole hearts to God. So, that was fun. Because our bikes were in the shop, that meant we needed to walk to our appointment with a member who lives extremely far away. So, we walked for two hours in the afternoon sun. On the bright side (hehe get it... “bright side”), my watch tan line is almost gone! God has really blessed me while on my mission. I don't seem to really get burned here. I just freckle a lot and tan. I didn't think that it was possible for my skin to tan, but apparently, it is. On the way back home, Elder S. told me funny mission stories in Greek. The best part was I understood everything.

WEDNESDAY: We picked up the bikes and went finding in Ledra again. We found a Catholic service center, and we are set up to volunteer there. We had lunch at KFC and happened to meet the other elders’ investigator there. We had lunch with him and helped him bring his groceries back to his apartment. He is a student here and is from China. We had a meeting with a member in the afternoon, which went well, and had English class with our friend from Cameroon.

THURSDAY: We did Weekly Planning, ate food, went to the bus stop early, and talked to a guy there. He was very nice. We then took the bus to Larnaca for a leadership meeting about Ministering. It was good. During the question and answer section of the meeting (all of which we already knew), I created a business model for a future company. So, it was a very productive meeting for me! xD I also got my package from home. THANKS, MOM! It's a good thing she sent me fat pants because I needed them. ;) I loved the gifts and appreciate them very much.

FRIDAY: We did service at the football field again. We helped paint the lines and shovel the cut grass. Then, we had mission leader training via Zoom (kind of like Skype), and after that, we had another Zoom meeting with the Zone Leaders and the other Cyprus district. We got set up for our upcoming district meetings and received the announcements from Mission Leadership Council. By the time all of that was done, we had lunch (disappointing Chinese food), and then we went to visit a member with the F. family. We went out finding after that and met a Filipino lady who wants us to come eat food at her house.

SATURDAY: We had a rough morning finding in Ledra. We only spoke to two people. Later in the day, we evaluated and knew we needed to repent. We weren't where we should have been. We had only gone there to fill time, and that is why we did not find success. We decided to go out right then and there and try to make it up to the Lord. We went to a place that felt right, but there was absolutely nothing there! On our way back to our bikes, I felt we should knock the doors on an apartment building (we do not knock doors here, especially during siesta), and so we did. Neither one of us had much faith. But, the third door we knocked opened, actually it opened only as we were stepping into the elevator to leave, and we talked to a guy. Miracles and the Spirit are real, guys. We had a very short lesson with our friend and branch president (he translates the English to French) and then had dinner at a less active's home. His wife made a ton of food (she is Filipino), and so we got to take stuff back home with us. Her cheesecake is amazing! It is so good. One time, it fell on the floor, and missionaries started eating it off the floor because they didn't want it to go to waste.

SUNDAY: We had our friend in church and taught the Restoration during second hour instead of going to Sunday School. It was a little rough because we weren't too prepared for it. It was kind of a last-minute decision to do that. We had a potluck after church, which was okay, and then we did Family History. I actually found people and added them to my family tree. It felt really good, but man, genealogy is stressful and hard. We did a whiteboard that evening with the other elders. It wasn't as good as last week, but it was still ok.

That's about it for me. Love and miss you all. Please pray and ask God if he is there. If you pray with a sincere desire to know, He will show you in some way that He exists.

Welcome to the City of Nepalis, Bangladeshis, and Africans!

Elder Muller's District in Paphos

Welcome one and all to Week 1 in Nicosia!

Nicosia is the capital city of Cyprus and is divided in the middle by a green line. On one side, we have the Greek Cypriots. On the other side, there are the Turks. Don't worry, we are all very safe, and there are never any issues.

TUESDAY: I was still in Paphos. We had Elder H. with us and went to go and visit some members with the Sampsons. We had an adventure trying to find a box for a package Elder R. needed to send home, and then we had District Meeting. The meeting was great with everyone actually talking and having a good time. I went to go say goodbye to our friends in Paphos, and that evening, we had an activity in the church. We watched the Messiah performed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Only a few friends came, but it was very good. Also, bacon flavored potato chips are amazing.

WEDNESDAY: Transfer day! We got up, and I finished putting my stuff in the suitcases. We headed over to our friend's apartment and had breakfast with him. He made some great food, and it was really hard to have to say goodbye. He was the first person on my mission that I have truly taught, and I will always remember him for that.

Delicious!

We went and said goodbye to our friends in the charity shop as well. S. and J. demanded wedding invitations, and J. took my picture so she won't forget me, haha. They are absolutely hilarious! Elder Sampson picked us up, and we proceeded to pick up Elder A. and leave Elder R. with Elder C.

Brothers in the Gospel

We drove to Limassol and picked up the sister missionaries and had a family road trip to Larnaca, jamming the whole way! We had to wait in the airport for everybody to gather and then send off the missionaries who were leaving. Then, Elder H., Sister H., Sister S., and myself went downstairs and waited for our new companions. Once they were here, we headed off, and Elder S. and I were on our way to Nicosia. We got to the apartment and went to work. That night, we unpacked and went to bed.

THURSDAY: We tried to find a bike shop in the morning but were unsuccessful. We had weekly planning and talked about our district and our responsibilities as the District Leaders (learn more about what it means to be a district leader on an LDS mission). We went out and started talking to people. On the way home, I had a little mishap with my bike, a curb, and my elbow and knee. I got a scrape on my elbow and one on my knee as well, but nothing serious at all.

FRIDAY: Friday was a long day. We went and did service at a football pitch with a friend of the other elders. He is from China. In the evening, we went to the Fleming family’s apartment for dinner and an area review and planning meeting. The Flemings are our senior missionary couple here in Nicosia. On our way there, we made friends with a music shop owner, and he let me play guitar and piano. It was great to play. Dinner was great, and the Flemings are awesome. We were exhausted at the end of the day because we were biking the entire time. We visited a bunch of members and less-active members, and it was sooooo hot.

SATURDAY: We went running this morning because we both need to work off the 50 pounds of candy my mom sent! ;) I am in much better shape than I thought. I was barely winded after 20 minutes of jogging (don't laugh you fitness nuts). We had a missionary correlation meeting with the branch president and all the missionaries. A random less active member, a very old Cypriot man, showed up for the first time in years. We had like six hours of finding and biking. Biking in Nicosia is so much better than Paphos. The hills are wussy hills here. My bike chain fell off twice, but I fixed it all up. We got a call from a guy named F. who spoke only French and very little English; he wanted to come to church on Sunday, so we said great! Then 30 minutes later, we stopped on our bikes and talked to this guy from Cameroon who also is named F. and only spoke French. Except, this guy wasn't interested at all. So, we were like, "funny coincidence"! BUT NOPE! Sunday, we met the guy from the phone, and guess what, that's right: SAME GUY!  On the way home that night, I was fixing my bike chain for the second time, and some drunk Cypriot guys started yelling at us. They seemed to think they knew about our church. Except, they were combining Jehovah's Witnesses, Amish, and aliens, I think. It was pretty funny.

SUNDAY: F. came to church, and our branch president translated for him. I gave a talk and introduced myself. We did family history, and Elder S. is really good at it. We did a white board activity in Ledra, and it was great. We had really good conversations. The gift of tongues is real. Once I was in the groove, my Greek was flowing, and I had a some really good conversations with people. (White board activities are successful in busy city areas.)

That's about it for my week. It is really hot here, but that is everywhere in Cyprus. Stay safe everybody. Love you all!

Just Call Me Sister Müller!

Hello, everyone, and welcome back to the last email from the city of paradise!

TUESDAY: We were supposed to have a Zone Football match against a team here in Paphos, but they were too scared and bailed out at the last minute. So, we went to Limassol for a zone training meeting. The meeting was extremely good, and everyone felt the Spirit. We also started writing a script for a Book of Mormon play series that we are creating. We were inspired after the Passion Play.

WEDNESDAY: We went to the refugee center again and played football with the kids. We had a great time in English and Greek classes. It's so funny. Our English class students love us teaching straight from the Gospel Principles manual! So, we talked about service, and after Greek class, I spoke to one guy about temples for 15 minutes. We had branch council, and then that was pretty much it.

THURSDAY: We had weekly planning and then service. We spent the afternoon/evening with the B. family, their son who is here on holiday, and our friend. It was a great BBQ and an interesting lesson. Satan really did not want the Spirit to be there. Every type of interruption that could possibly happen did, lol. But, it was still good.

FRIDAY: We went up to P.'s house and visited him for an hour. Riding down the hill on the bikes was great though. We went and saw M., an elderly Irish woman that Elder J. and I met, to see if she still needed help moving. We met her husband and spoke to them for an hour. They are lovely. We played football with Father F. (a Catholic priest) and some kids and received transfer calls that evening. I will be going to Nicosia Olympia with Elder S. We will be co-district leaders and also whitewashing (this is a missionary term for when both companions are new to the area; typically, at least one of the elders is in an area already before a companion is transferred there).

SATURDAY: Call me Sister Müller because I baked lemon cookies today. The whole day was hectic, and nothing that we planned for actually worked out, but the day was still good. We made little Easter gifts and tried to hand them out that evening. We played football again, and it was pretty boring. Oh, some people from English class also gave us three cakes to say thank you for all of our hard work, so that was dope.  😊

SUNDAY: We had General Conference in church and watched the Saturday Afternoon session (watch it here). Our friend came to church and liked General Conference. We had a munch and mingle afterwards and then went to the Sampsons’ to watch the Sunday Afternoon session (watch it here). The Limassol elders also came this evening because of some transfer logistics. So, Elders G. and H. stayed the night in our apartment.

I only have 18 months left, and I baked cookies (which is why I am like a sister missionary since they serve for 18 months instead of 24).

I love you all and have a great week!
